Determining a right angle using the 3-4-5 method
First, mark the desired corner point. Then scribe a length of 3 m along the edge where the right angle is to be created. Now measure a length of 4 m from the same corner point, roughly in the desired direction of the right angle.
Now place the zero point of the tape measure at the 3 m mark and measure a distance of 5 m to the 4 m line. The point where the 5 m distance intersects the 4 m mark forms a right angle with the corner point.
This method is based on the right triangle with side ratios 3: 4: 5 and also works with any multiples or subdivisions of these lengths – the key is that the ratio 3: 4 5 is maintained.
