Balcony cladding

General information

The cladding materials contained in this installation manual have been tested for their resistance to hard and soft impact stresses in accordance with the following standards or guidelines. The technical details in this document are based on these guidelines and relevant tests:

  • ETB Directive ‘Components that protect against falls’, version: 1985
  • EN 12600:2002
  • ÖN B 5371:2011

Applicable guidelines

The following guidelines must be observed in addition to the PREFA installation guidelines for balcony cladding:

  • All national provisions, regulations, standards, legal provisions (e.g. provisions on railing heights, climbing aids, max. permissible opening sizes in the material, fire safety, structural safety, etc.)
  • PREFA installation manual for PREFABOND aluminium composite panels
  • PREFA installation manual for extruded profiles

Preliminary technical remarks for balconies

The frame structure and the balcony cladding must be protected against corrosion, and possible contact corrosion must also be prevented by the selected materials.

The anchoring elements used for installation (on concrete, masonry, etc.) must be dimensioned according to the local wind loads and structural safety requirements.

In the case of both new buildings and renovations, evidence must be provided on site in compliance with the applicable rules and regulations.

fasteners

Only the following rivets with increased tensile breaking force that were used and confirmed in the tests are to be used for fastening PREFA balcony cladding:

  • PREFA balcony rivets SSO-D15-∅ 5 × 9.5 mm made of inox stainless steel

The clamping range of the rivets is from 4 to 9.5 mm.

Use the corresponding rivet nosepiece for the PREFA balcony rivet in order to fasten the PREFABOND aluminium composite panels to the PREFA balcony rivet.

We recommend using a blind rivet fastener with a setting force of 10,000 N, for example, Accubird PRO from Gesipa for the installation.

Important information

Standard aluminium façade rivets are not permitted for balcony cladding, as their tensile breaking force is too low.

Sub-structure framework – maximum spacing of fixings and edges

  • Maximum panel size 1,500 × 3,000 mm
  • Frame structure galvanised steel: at least 60 × 60 × 2 mm (or structurally equivalent)

PREFABOND on vertical frame structure

PREFABOND on horizontal frame structure

Note

The span of the frame structure must be structurally checked in terms of the loads acting on it.
