PREFA presents improved roof rhomboid panels

Classic roof rhomboid panels are a tradition type of cover. The secret of their success lies in their timeless elegance, which makes them just as suitable for renovating historical buildings as for use in modern architecture. Aluminium specialist PREFA has now undertaken an aesthetic and technical relaunch of its roof rhomboid panels.

Aesthetically, the new PREFA roof rhomboid panels have remodelled points. The reduced height gives them a more harmonic look overall, promoting the roof's classic appearance. The new PREFA rhomboid roof panel is somehow lighter and more elegant, a look favoured particularly in modern architecture. However, the distinct rhomboid pattern fits in just as well with its past as its future with the new roof panel. Mike Bucher, Managing Director of the PREFA Group, explains: "We highly value the consistent development of our products. There is always a detail that can be improved upon and that is exactly what we have succeeded in doing with the PREFA rhomboid roof panel once again, and we are very proud of it."
The reshaped points not only add an aesthetic sophistication, but also add practical value to the panels. Only roofs with a pitch of 25° or more could previously be covered with conventional roof rhomboid panels, whereas the new PREFA roof rhomboid panels can now be used for roofs with a pitch of 22°. PREFA's quality criteria, "storm-proof" and "break-proof" are still retained even at this pitch angle and are guaranteed by PREFA.
The sensational interplay of light and shadow is enhanced with the new PREFA rhomboid roof panel. The innovative PREFA P.10 surface coating makes the aluminium even harder and has a matte finish with full UV, colour and weather protection. PREFA's unique 40-year guarantee covers both the coating and the aluminium itself. The PREFA rhomboid roof panel is available in five P.10 colours: brown P.10, anthracite P.10, oxide red P.10, light grey P.10 and stone grey P.10.

PREFA camouflages the "Zebra house" in Kaiserslautern

An architectural concept of using camouflage as a surprising design and uniting element between America and Germany was applied to the booster station in Vogelweh-Kleeblatt by covering the building with PREFA FALZONAL.

Kaiserslautern is the largest support establishment in the world for the U.S. Army outside of the United States. Approximately 50,000 military members and civilians have been living and working at the military bases there since 1946. The Opel plant can point to an equally longstanding tradition in Kaiserslautern; about 3,300 employees go to work there every day. Fate brought these two Kaiserslautern institutions together to play a decisive role in using PREFA FALZONAL® to decorate the visible outer sides of the booster station for the city's water supply, built in 2009.
The Vogelweh District houses the U.S. Army, whose living quarters are connected to Kaiserslautern's municipal water supply. The booster station became a necessity for this reason, its location exactly between U.S. Army living quarters and the Opel plant to the north. Architectural firm Molter-Linnemann took this special situation as a source of inspiration and presented its unifying design concept, "Camouflage – Dazzle Painting". This concept puts forward the idea that the U.S. Army are not the only ones who wear camouflage; the Opel prototypes are also disguised before being put through their test rounds at the plant.
Precision in every detail.
The booster station is a concrete building with superimposed wood. The different-coloured PREFA FALZONAL® strips were laid onto the building in an exact pattern. The idea behind it is that the zebra pattern dazzle camouflage would distort the façade when viewed from a lateral elevation — a principle used in the camouflaging of ships in World War I. For this effect to work perfectly, the FALZONAL® strips had to be laid following an exact pattern in colours white, matte grey and anthracite. The Wildner tinsmith team from Westhofen carried out all of the work and set each strip in its intended position, accurate down to the last millimetre. The result speaks for itself: an impressive zebra pattern that meets all of the criteria for the perfect dazzle camouflage.
FALZONAL® – multifaceted quality for creative design.
FALZONAL® coloured aluminium in seam quality is an aluminium band-shaped semi-finished product intended specifically for use in seam technology in terms of the alloy used, its strength and the coating applied to it. It is great for creating rainproof, double-shell, rear-ventilated and single-shell, non-rear-ventilated roof and wall structures, as well as complex façade architecture. FALZONAL® is available in many different surface finishes: from solid colours to metallics to copper, zinc or titanium colour tones.

New MACO production site finished with PREFA façade

For the façade design of their new plant, internationally renowned Salzburg company MACO Mayer & Co Beschläge GmbH used PREFALZ from PREFA.

Over the next ten years, a new state-of-the-art production plant is set to be completed for MACO Beschläge GmbH, built across a total space of over 60,000 m² in Mauterndorf in the Lungau area near Salzburg. Planned by architects Resmann & Schindlmeier, the project will be implemented across several construction phases. The façade design for the first module – the production site already commissioned for the door lock assembly area – will be provided by aluminium roof and façade specialists PREFA.
The plant's structural shell is 410 m long and 85 m wide. The architects wanted to give the stately façade a functional yet elegant and modern rear-ventilated metal shell, which would blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape thanks to its colouring. When it came to selecting the material, a decision was made to use a PREFA aluminium façade. The wide range of colours, longevity, stability and simple processing that this material has to offer, as well as the fact that aluminium cannot rust, tipped the scales in its favour. PREFA also scored highly on know-how and technical support during the planning phase. "The central façade requirement from the architects' point of view was to embellish the flat surface of the structural shell with a horizontal visual structure", explains Peter Kopp, Project Developer at PREFA. This gives the building as a whole an airier and less formal look and also highlights its unique position on the sloping hillside plot.
Technical finesse in every detail
The design used the PREFALZ angled standing seam façade, which was laid horizontally across the large surface. The PREFALZ aluminium strips used are 0.7 mm-strength and are fitted in seam strips max. 500 mm wide and 3000 mm long to guarantee optimum stability and rigidity. The corner design, with its staggered vertical joints, adds to the sharpness of the object contours.
PREFALZ – top quality for outstanding creativity
Thanks to a special alloy, the aluminium PREFALZ is more pliable than most comparable materials and is easier to shape. This opens up countless creative possibilities for the roof and façade design. What's more, paint quality is not affected by this high level of pliability. Aluminium PREFALZ cannot rust or break and is 100% recyclable.

PREFA ACQUIRES PINICAL PATENT RIGHTS

The PREFA Group has expanded its product range and acquired the brand name and patent rights to the unique PINICAL surface profile from Theodor Eder, inventor of the "PINICAL roof". The new product will be sold under the name PREFA PINICAL and will blend seamlessly into the PREFA Group's high-quality product range. "PREFA PINICAL will enable new three-dimensional, smooth and joint-free roof and façade designs for customised architecture", explains Mike Bucher, Managing Director of the PREFA...

The high-quality aluminium profiles have their origins in shipbuilding. Theodor Eder invented the PINICAL system, which uses a stretch-bending machine to bring special extruded profiles into the desired shape, so that they can then be mounted on a support frame. "My basic intention was to build a joint-free, smooth ship from aluminium, which would no longer need any welding. During her architecture degree, my daughter pointed out to me that my PINICAL aluminium profile system could also potentially be used for extraordinary three-dimensional roof and façade designs.“ Theodor Eder will be retained by PREFA as a consultant to ensure continuity and further development of the system.
PREFA PINICAL
Word of the PINICAL system quickly spread amongst architects – for example, parts of the dome of the German Reichstag building, the hung ceiling in the Museumsquartier in Vienna and, amongst other things, the Semperit research and development hall in Wimpassing have already been constructed using PINICAL. One of the largest examples of use of the new product is the modern central electrical supply network substation in Vienna, which was designed by the architectural firm APM (architects Podivin and Marginter). PREFA PINICAL was once again able to demonstrate its high-quality properties in the construction of the rounded roof. The grey powder-coated aluminium profiles were mounted without joints, are guaranteed to be waterproof and give the impression of the "flowing energy" of the Vienna electricity companies.
Aluminium – the best material for a long-lasting design
PREFA roofs and façades are made from high-quality aluminium. The advantages of aluminium cannot be matched by any other material: It is light, break-proof, easy to shape, yet still very stable and completely rust-proof and thus low-maintenance. Mounted on an object, the PREFA PINICAL guarantees the necessary elasticity while also retaining the required stability. The roofs are also environmentally friendly thanks to aluminium being 100% recyclable.

For a long time, nothing ran smoothly for the construction of an apartment building in a dream location in Kärnten – Velden am Wörthersee. Property developer Christian Rössler from Seidl&Rössler Immobilien GmbH tried everything to get planning consent – right up to the Higher Administrative Court [Verwaltungsgerichtshof]. First the neighbours in Kranzelhofenstraße refused consent for the building, then its height and then the planned façade design. The residents won in the latter case, albeit not entirely: a long-lasting, modern, aluminium façade solution was chosen instead of the wooden shingle façade they wanted. The roof and three of the four exterior walls are now covered in 370 m² of PREFA roof tiles with a light grey, matte, stucco P.10 surface coating. The owners of the five exclusive apartments bought the property based on the blueprints, with a different façade design. "At first, I found it hard to imagine with the PREFA aluminium roof tiles, but the final design turned out very well. The façade on our house is extraordinary and it looks fantastic!" says Thomas Hopfgartner, who has moved with his family into the 115 m² penthouse with a view over the Wörthersee.

In the best position
The Wörthersee, lying in the triangle between Austria, Italy and Slovenia, is Austria's most popular lake. Snuggled in between mountains and hills, with an almost Mediterranean climate and a sunny Southern atmosphere, the Wörthersee has a legendary reputation. Velden am Wörthersee isn't just full of hustle and bustle; you can also find plenty of places to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Promenade, casino, film set: life in Velden means high quality of life. The location is a real tourist highlight in the region, with its castle hotel Schloss Hotel having been featured on TV. Velden is considered to be romantic yet on-the-pulse, traditional with a casino flair. Architecture in Velden also has to combine these contradictions: traditional and modern, sensitivity and chic.
"The challenge was to construct an apartment building with a striking architectural shape that also fitted in completely with the unmistakeable Kärntnen location," says Rössler. Working with the Ortsbildpflegekommission [commission to preserve local heritage], the hunt was on for a material for the façade design that could be laid in small tiles like wooden shingles, but in a long-lasting form with a modern character. The answer: aluminium; more particularly, the highly resistant PREFA roof tiles with the new, matte P.10 coating. The surface innovation PREFA P.10 complies with the highest quality requirements, even when it comes to its long-term appearance. With an initial matte look, the roof covering is almost entirely resistant to UV radiation and stays looking as good as new for decades. "Its durability is a major bonus, in addition to the way it looks," confirms Rössler, who goes on to say: "The basic idea when planning the apartment building was for a modern building that made use of current trends. We wanted to build something architecturally extraordinary, while also making the best possible use of the set area we had available to us. By making the façade curve, we were able to maximise the area and get the best possible look. After years of difficulties with the construction of the apartment building, I was thrilled by how easy and quick it was to clad the façade with PREFA roof tiles."

Great curves
The beautifully-shaped building that now looks out proudly over the Wörthersee required careful planning and execution. "The cutting and execution of the curved edges was a major task for the installers," says Roman Tröstl, PREFA engineer — and he should know. "The challenge for us was that we could only use a few of our standard details, due to the shape of the building. We used a lot of technical planning aids and drew a few building-specific finishing details. Most importantly, we relied on the expert knowledge of our master tinsmith, Leo Höld, who helped me draw up the details." Three men from the Leopold roofing and tinsmith company in Feldkirchen managed to clad the roof and façade in three weeks. Reinhard Lotterisch remembers the project well: "Yes, the edges and window surrounds were a challenge, but we soon mastered the job in hand, thanks to the excellent fixing options and relatively easy technical installation of the PREFA products." FACT BOX:
Property developer: Christian Rössler
Tinsmith company: Leopold, Feldkirchen
Building: Apartment building
Product: PREFA roof tiles, light grey, surface PREFA P.10
Area: 370 m²

20 years of PREFA in Germany

Our company began to develop its sales activities in Germany 20 years ago. The former sales office in Landshut began operations in 1990 in the midst of the political changes in Germany and Europe brought about by the population of the former GDR.

Political changes in Germany 20 years ago went hand in hand with changes in the economic landscape. Company owners negotiated with the Treuhandanstalt (Trust Agency) to purchase state-owned businesses. Metallwerk Wasungen was one of these businesses. As the largest aluminium tube manufacturer in the former GDR, the production site attracted the interest of Dr Cornelius Grupp. He purchased the company and made it part of the Tubex Group, which is in turn part of CAG Holding. Owned by Dr Cornelius Grupp, CAG also includes the following companies: Glanzstoff, Stölzle-Oberglas, PREFA and Neuman-Aluminium. The new Tubex site in Wasungen was now to become the new sales support point for PREFA in Germany. This decision was based on its attractive, central position (almost in the middle of Germany), as well as the emerging renovations market in the new federal states from the former East Germany. Work for PREFA began in Wasungen. In summer 1990, the expansion of the location began and the first employees were trained by PREFA in Marktl (Lower Austria). This included product information and tinsmith techniques, as well as the necessary skills for market introduction and sales. Today the Head of Engineering, it was Mr Jens Oppitz and his colleagues Mr Jens Kurz and Mr Karl-Heinz Neitzke who were the first to learn and transfer that PREFA expertise from Austria. An office building and warehouse were established on-site in Wasungen, under the management of Mr Werner Mittelsdorf. The offices were housed in "civil defence shelters" that were no longer needed and the first PREFA warehouse in Wasungen was created in a former Metallwerke production hall. Work finished in 1991 and the Wasungen site was opened with much excitement. With a sales office in Landshut and the warehouse in Wasungen, the infrastructure for sales in Germany was complete. Now it was just a question of introducing an entirely unknown product onto the German market. The establishment of a sales structure was the top priority. Then, as now, expert tradesmen were amongst the most important partners for the market introduction of the PREFA range. The committed work and enthusiasm of those first employees paid off. PREFA began to grow, starting 1991 with annual revenues of just short of DM 1 million. In 1993, PREFA in Wasungen was established as a separate limited company [GmbH] as a 100% subsidiary of PREFA in Austria. Management of the Austrian company was taken on by Alfred Schroll as Director and Mr Reiner Angler was appointed as the Managing Director in Germany. The young company continued to grow, as more and more builders and tradesmen became convinced of the superiority of the materials and product systems at PREFA. The range expanded along with demand. One warehouse was no longer enough to satisfy market requirements. The decision to build a new site was made in 1996. Thanks to support from Austrian colleagues, a further production site was built and used to successfully manufacture "PREFA – Made in Germany". The new building was managed by Mr Walter Pacher and was completed within two years. Mr Frank Bußdorf was there from the start as the Head of Production and Technology. At 5:08 on 18 September 1997, Ms Carmen Neumeier was proud to present the millionth PREFA roof tile from her machine. The incredible level of demand, particularly from the slate regions in Germany, was given more support in April 1998 when a new logistics and service centre began operations in Chemnitz. New production sites and technologies were put into use and the company range and service expanded continually. In 1999 Mr Walter Pacher took over as Managing Director in Wasungen. The period after that was shaped by rapid growth, as the result of innovative product developments and the establishment of a strong sales organisation both within the company and in the field. This was supported by Mr Karsten Köhler as the Head of Sales as of July 1999 and as Managing Director as of November 2001. A skilled technical department, highly praised within the industry, offers in-house and field services for planners, tradesmen and commercial agents. The Marketing department creates tailor-made campaigns and measures for joint success, in order to support our customers. The strong focus on marketing and sales was always a major challenge and necessity for PREFA, in order to achieve growth in an established market. In 2001, complete brand redevelopment began. Nothing like it had been seen in the industry. "PREFA - a roof as strong as a bull" became a well-known slogan and, combined with the bull image in a red circle, it became the most well-known brand for roofing material. The most recent indication that the company remains focused on being close to its customers is the establishment of a new sales company in Bergisch-Gladbach in 2009. Run by Mr Andreas Palli, PREFA-Aluminiumprodukte GmbH will make a major contribution to the further growth of PREFA in Germany. The international orientation of the entire company has become more significant, with the Wasungen production site being used to supply goods all over Europe. As members of the management board, Ms Kathrin Böhner (Head of Sales) and Mr Frank Bußdorf (Production, Technology) are working with the Managing Director, Mr Karsten Köhler, to bring further success to the company. Now employing 84 people, PREFA in Germany has become the market leader for coloured aluminium on roofs and façades!

Interview with the Managing Director of the PREFA Group

New Managing Director emphasises "PREFA spirit"

[Translate to english:] Bereits zum 1.

Wo sehen Sie Potenziale?

Great style with PREFA

Visual and thermal renovation of an existing private house in the Linz suburbs with PREFA Reynobond façade.

At the foot of the Grünberg in Linz Urfahr is a renovated, modern single-family house – lovingly called "Blumi" by architects, tinsmiths and neighbours. The four-storey building with an approx. area of 400 m² has undergone thermal renovation and an architectural upgrade with PREFA products. A rear-ventilated PREFA Reynobond façade was mounted on the external walls of the house. The structural shell of the old house has been significantly improved by lifting the side gable walls and reinforcing structures.
Rounding off the overall look, panels with specially designed countersunk ornamental patterns were mounted on the south-facing glass façade. The flower pattern design was created by the architectural firm "x architekten" and implemented by PREFA. "The advantages of the light, storm-proof and corrosion-free PREFA façade impressed us and made our choice of material much easier. The earthy bronze leather colour of the PREFA façade also fitted in well with the surrounding greenery," says a spokesman for "x architekten". Rudolf Kapl, a tinsmith from Bad Leonfelden, mounted the high-quality 300 m² PREFA façade. "The challenge was not just to achieve the required look, but also to ensure the structure was entirely storm-proof. We were able to comply with both these conditions perfectly with the PREFA Reynobond façade," says Gerhard Nimmervoll from the Kapl company. Rudolf Kapl is already a real PREFA expert: amongst other things, he was responsible for cladding the Cultural Centre in Engerwitzdorf (Upper Austria) with a PREFA façade.
The Reynobond façade is made up of rust-proof, break-proof aluminium bonded panels with high-quality coil coating.

Italian environmental school Leonardo Da Vinci chooses PREFA Photovoltaic

The Leonardo Da Vinci school in Gruaro (Italy) chose to use high-quality PREFA aluminium and photovoltaic roof tiles for its new roof, in order to provide a good example of energy saving for its pupils. In addition to these educational values, the installation of the PREFA photovoltaic system has also proved its economic worth. The photovoltaic system reduces the emission of hazardous CO2 gases, as well as electricity bills. The Italian school has a gabled roof, covered with anthracite-coloured PREFA aluminium roof tiles on the northwest side and with monocrystalline PREFA photovoltaic roof tiles on the southeast side. The photovoltaic system has an output of 15 kWp and is integrated perfectly into the overall look of the school. The electrical contacts for the solar systems are incorporated into the fixing system of the roof tiles, while the inverter and control unit are part of the standard design. Production of 1 kWh solar power saves 0.53 kg of carbon dioxide, compared to the same amount of power generated by fossil fuels. The sustainable roofing project for the environmental school was facilitated by the support of the region and the Italian state. By feeding the energy gained in this way into the normal mains power grid, the investment in the PREFA photovoltaic system will soon prove to be worth it: the overall costs over the lifetime of the PREFA photovoltaic roof of EUR 10,000 for each loan payment is offset against an income of EUR 12,000 for the generated power. The 800 m² PREFA roof was installed over a two-month period by the tinsmith company Lattoneria Totale. Many more generations of schoolchildren are set to learn their lessons under the futuristic roof of the Leonardo Da Vinci school.

No more painting, no more renovations - aluminium façades with the aesthetics of wood!

Façades are exposed to all sorts of extreme weather conditions. In turn, this leads to the accumulation of dirt, peeling paint and (in the worst cases) masonry damage.

It is well-known that façades made from colour-coated aluminium are incredibly low-maintenance alternatives. However, there is now a new option that makes simultaneous use of the advantages of a metal solution and the aesthetics of a wood façade. PREFA has combined the properties of aluminium façades with the visual look of wood cladding.

One permanent solution is offered by PREFA aluminium sidings, coloured "Colonial Red". The 1 mm aluminium sidings have a standard width of 200 mm, available with or without shadow gap. Mainly used for non-bearing, rear-ventilated façades, the sidings are given 11 mm chamfers on the profile ends in series production. However, the profiles can also be delivered without chamfers, i.e. levelled. Corresponding start and end profiles are also available with the red wood look and can be installed safely in a horizontal direction. The product range is rounded off with suitably coloured band material.

The PREFA siding range has now opened up almost unlimited combination options. For example, smooth or stucco surfaces are available in various coverage widths. The choice is made even harder by the incredible number of standard colour tones available and the option of ordering any RAL colour you want. All sidings are made from the aluminium alloy AIMn1Mg 0.5, material No 3005 H44 (profile quality). The 25 μm coating of the original material is applied in the coil coating process.
